Jean notes an odd attraction Thomas seems to have to his brother's sexy companion Adeline (Hurley) during the adventure. A former male lodger, who lived briefly with the Norwegian immigrant family, was tried and hanged for the crime. One young woman (Polley) survived to tell the events in which her sister and sister-in-law were brutally murdered on an island located off the coast of New Hampshire, while their husbands were at sea. This film is based on a book by Anita Shreve that was losely based on an unsolved double murder in the 1800s. During the weekend, she learns as much about her own life as she does those of the woman she is researching. Jean (Catherine McCormack)' s poet-husband Thomas (Penn) has arranged to help his wife research her latest project, enlisting his brother (Lucas) and his sailboat for a research-romantic get away.
